About Coach Lake:
Kevin Lake took over the reins of the Spartans' wrestling program in October 2015. His two seasons at the helm have seen strong growth. In his first year leading the Black and Gold, Manchester University earned a pair of dual wins over in-state NCAA Division III rival Trine University and Lakeland College of Wisconsin; put an individual among the top five of the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championships (Kalib Jackson - 133); and had 10 individuals place within the top four of tournaments with one individual champion (K. Jackson) at the Mid-States Conference meet. That was followed by a 2016-17 campaign in which the school hosted the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championships; registered four dual victories; had a pair of top three placings at the Mid-States Conference tournament and were led by an individual (Chase Wilson - 141 pounds) who reached 30-or-more victories and was ranked on numerous polls throughout the year.
A 1998 graduate of Manchester, Lake rejoined the Spartan program after serving 4 years as Program Director of Beat the Streets Los Angeles (BTSLA), a nonprofit wrestling-based youth development organization. During his time in Los Angeles, Lake served on the committee for USA Wrestling’s Beat the Streets National efforts as well as on the local organizing committee for the United World Wrestling Freestyle World Cups in 2014 and 2015. Prior to his to his time at BTSLA, Lake was the head assistant coach at NCAA Div. I Fresno State University. With the Bulldogs, Lake coached 4 NCAA Championships qualifiers including 2005 Western Regional Champion Greg Gifford. Through Lake’s efforts, the Bulldogs were credited with the 15th best recruiting class in the nation in 2005 named by Intermat Wrestling.
Additional coaching stops include South Dakota State University, where he helped lead the Jacks to a 10-8 dual record to go along with a first place finish in the American Division at the Virginia Duals. Prior to his work in South Dakota, Lake served as assistant coach at Ivy League program Princeton University. During his time at Princeton, he coach 2-time NCAA Div. I All-American and NCAA finalist Greg Parker while the Tigers earned four All-Ivy selections. Lake also has previous head coaching experience, leading the team at NCAA Division III MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois.
A wrestler during his four years at Manchester, Lake was a part of a squad that won four Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference championships and placed in the NCAA Division III top-10 three times, including the 1997-98 season where the team finished a school-best sixth at the NCAA Championships. Lake earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education and Exercise Science from MU in May of 1998 and a Master of Arts degree in Sport Administration from Central Michigan University in December 2004. He and his wife Christine, who serves as the Spartans women’s soccer coach, have two children, Jayla, Amara, and Oakley.
